The\u00a0Ko’jua\u00a0<\/strong>is one of the oldest dances of the Mi\u2019kmaw\u00a0people. It is\u00a0a very special\u00a0dance that belongs only to\u00a0them and\u00a0is still enjoyed at Mi\u2019kmaw gatherings today.\u00a0It has very few steps, making it\u00a0easy to\u00a0learn.\u00a0Dancers\u00a0express themselves wearing\u00a0colourful\u00a0and uniquely designed regalia<\/strong>, sharing stories through their movements.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Depending on the style and family connection of a specific Ko’jua<\/strong>\u00a0dance,\u00a0the movements<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>focus on swinging\u00a0arms\u00a0and\u00a0shuffling\u00a0legs, helping\u00a0the dancer\u00a0weave\u00a0the story being shared.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dancers tap or stomp the ground three times with one foot\u00a0while\u00a0moving forward, then do the same with the other foot. At the same time, both arms swing together,\u00a0as if\u00a0using ski poles. These movements repeat as everyone dances in a circle while one person leads the song.\u00a0The song can tell many\u00a0stories.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ko’jua <\/strong>dance is shared\u00a0at many important moments. These include\u00a0Mi\u2019kmaw community gatherings\u00a0called a\u00a0Mawi\u2019omi<\/strong>\u00a0(also called a powwow), as well as\u00a0births, deaths, coming-of-age celebrations, community hunts, elder gatherings, and\u00a0Wi\u2019kupaltimk<\/strong>,\u00a0which is\u00a0the Feast of Forgiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
